When Hope Feels Lost… and Then Finds You Again

There are moments in life when everything feels uncertain. Plans fall apart, prayers seem unanswered, and what we believed would turn out one way suddenly goes another.

Luke 24 speaks directly into those moments.

It begins not with celebration—but with confusion. The women arrive at the tomb expecting to find Jesus’ body, only to discover the stone rolled away. Instead of clarity, they are met with questions: “Why do you look for the living among the dead?” (Luke 24:5)

The disciples didn’t immediately recognize what had happened. Even after hearing the news, they struggled to believe. And then we meet two men walking on the road to Emmaus. They are discouraged, defeated, and trying to make sense of everything that just happened. They say something that feels all too familiar, “We had hoped…” (Luke 24:21). That phrase carries weight.

We’ve all said it in some form:

  • We had hoped the deal would go through…
  • We had hoped things would work out…
  • We had hoped for a different outcome…

But what they didn’t realize was this—Jesus was walking right beside them. Jesus shows up even when we don’t recognize him.  In one of the most beautiful moments in Scripture, Jesus walks with them, listens to them, and gently begins to explain the truth. Not with force or frustration. But with patience. Sometimes God doesn’t reveal everything all at once. Instead, He walks with us through the confusion until we’re ready to see clearly. It wasn’t until they sat down and broke bread together that their eyes were opened.  Suddenly they understood.

When Jesus appears to the disciples later, He doesn’t scold them for their doubt. He meets them in it. He shows them His hands and feet. He eats with them. He reassures them. Then He does something important—He gives them purpose.

“You are witnesses of these things.” (Luke 24:48)

Their story didn’t end in confusion—it turned into calling.

Luke 24 reminds us of a few truths we all need:

  • God is still working—even when we don’t see it
  • Disappointment is not the end of the story
  • Jesus walks with us in our uncertainty
  • Understanding often comes after the struggle, not before
  • What feels like an ending may actually be the beginning

That “we had hoped” moment? It’s often right before God reveals something greater than we expected.

Where in your life are you saying, “I had hoped…”? Now ask yourself this, What if God is still writing the story? What if He’s walking beside you right now—even if you don’t recognize Him yet?

Luke 24 is not just about the resurrection; it’s about restoration. It’s about how God meets us in confusion, walks with us through doubt, and gently opens our eyes to something greater than we imagined. And when He does—everything changes.
